Reading a Photo #1

Tim Laman, National Geographic

What interests you most about this work of art?

I'd really like to know what he's doing with those baby chimps. He could be saving them, or he could be take them to be killed. The fact that there are so many of them in this wheelbarrow is concerning either way. It's really unclear what's happening in this photo, and it makes me uneasy.

What is closer to you? Further away?

The thing we see right up front is the seemingly smiling chimps in the wheelbarrow. One might not even notice the man behind it, clearly carting them off somewhere. The man in the back is probably what makes this photo go from adorable to uncomfortable.

What do you think is happening in this photograph? What else could be happening?

I can think of a few possibilities. One, the one I sort of hope it is, is that these babies wandered away from their group and are being brought back to their territory. However, knowing as much about chimps as I do, that is incredibly unlikely. A second more preferable, but not quite as, option would be that poachers came and killed their families but left the babies for some reason, and this man is bringing them to a sanctuary. My third possibility, and one that I hope is not the case, is that this is some kind of population control and these babies are being carted off to be euthanized.
